What is travertine, and why does it define the Iranian facade?

Travertine is a limestone formed as calcium carbonate settles out of hot springs. Gas bubbles trapped during deposition leave its small, characteristic pores.

Iran is one of the world's largest travertine producers; Mahallat, Abbasabad, Dareh Bokhari and Hajiabad are its best-known quarries.

Two cuts give two characters: vein-cut, parallel to the layers, shows continuous lines; cross-cut, across them, gives a calm, clouded surface.

For facades, watch absorption, lot consistency and thickness — and supply each elevation from a single lot so no colour shift shows.
